NGC Green is leading Trinidad and Tobago’s renewable and sustainable energy transition. This was one of the central points raised by President Toni Sirju-Ramnarine at a recent UNDP Climate Change discussion at the Trinidad Hilton. In her presentation, Sirju-Ramnarine told the audience in a country heavily reliant on fossil fuels, where 35% of GDP and over 80% of export earnings stem from hydrocarbons, Trinidad and Tobago is reimagining its energy future. “NGC Green is championing this transformation to position Trinidad and Tobago as a leader in sustainable energy, to aid the country in achieving its National Determined Contributions of 30% renewable energy by 2030 and a 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2030” she said.
Sirju-Ramnarine revealed the journey begins with the Brechin Castle Solar Farm, set to be the country’s first large-scale solar project, “spanning 587 acres, this venture will install over 200,000 solar panels, generating 92MW of clean power by Q3 2025.” The project represents more than just an energy shift; it paves the way for local expertise development and international investment. NGC Green will be a 30% shareholder with the other shareholders being bp and Shell.
She indicated as well, beyond solar energy, NGC Green is exploring a diversified portfolio, including biogas, electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, alternative fuel technologies and is also on the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries Wind Energy Steering Committee.
Central to NGC Green’s vision is a “Just Transition,” ensuring that the shift to renewables creates jobs, fosters equity, and leaves no one behind. Public awareness campaigns and corporate social responsibility projects emphasize community engagement, ensuring widespread support for this new energy ecosystem.
Sirju-Ramnarine emphasized as Trinidad and Tobago progresses towards 2030, NGC Green’s initiatives stand as a testament to the nation’s agility and foresight and said “the road to sustainability may be challenging, but through collaboration, innovation, and bold leadership, a greener future is possible.”
